Structure and Governance

The Centre for Refugee Studies is accountable to both the CRS membership and to the larger university community. Formal accountability to the latter is through the Senate and the Vice-President of Research and Innovation at York University. Recently, the York University Senate has approved (upon recommendation by the Senate Committee on Research) the continuation of the Centre for Refugee Studies for a period of 7 years, 2001-2008. The Centre membership is involved in the governance structure of CRS through its Council, the Student Caucus, an Executive Committee, and the Director. Council has ultimate decision-making authority for the Centre (within the rules of the university). In particular, it is responsible for approving the annual budget, reviewing decisions of the Executive Committee, forming other committees, amending the standing rules, and making recommendations regarding director candidates in a search for a new director. Its membership consists of representatives of various parts of the CRS community, including faculty, students, staff, and associated and visiting researchers.
